About The Artist

The Artist, Maura Smyth I have 13 years experience teaching in primary schools. Since I set up my ceramics business in 1999, I have been involved in many varied ceramics projects with children from age 3 up. For several years, I have tutored children’s pottery classes in down arts centre, Downpatrick. In 2003, I was employed as artist in residence for 6 months in Dundalk, County Lough. This project involved introducing children in 2 primary schools to real clay. My classes included all ages in both schools.

My experience has helped me to develop age-appropriate projects from pre-school ages up, that can be created in one hour. Participants make real clay pieces that can be fired in an electric kiln, so they keep a durable ceramic piece of their own creation.

I also produce a range of contemporary stoneware ceramics, which is currently stocked in galleries and craft outlets throughout Ireland. This range includes candleholders, nightholders, vases, clocks, mirrors, trinket boxes and lamps. My pieces draw strong influences both from the celtic and art deco periods. Each piece is created in my home-based studio in Warrenpiont, Co. Down. My work is hand-built and hand decorated. I also undertake commissioned pieces.
